SEO + GEO
SEO and GEO: how they relate
GEO does not replace SEO. Here is where the two disciplines overlap and where they diverge.

SEO helps organisations perform in conventional search. GEO focuses on how organisations are discovered, represented, sourced and recommended in AI-powered search experiences. They are complementary.
Shared foundations
Both depend on pages that can be crawled and rendered, a clear information architecture, content that answers real questions, and a reputation that independent sources confirm.
Where they diverge
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary output | Ranked list of links | Composed answer |
| Main unit | Page | Passage, fact, entity |
| Success signal | Rankings, clicks | Mentions, citations, accuracy |
| Measurement | Position tracking, analytics | Sampled answers over a query set |
Practical consequences
- Write sections that answer one question completely, so a passage can be used out of context.
- Treat your organisation as an entity: consistent name, description and identifiers everywhere.
- Track accuracy, not only presence. An inaccurate description is a defect to fix.
A note on claims you may hear
Statements such as "SEO is dead" or "GEO replaces SEO" are not supported by how AI search works today. Many AI systems retrieve from web indexes that SEO work already influences.
