Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

The practice of improving how an organisation is discovered, represented, cited and recommended in AI-generated answers.

Updated

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving how an organisation is discovered, represented, cited and recommended by AI systems that generate answers rather than return a ranked list of links.

GEO covers the content an organisation publishes, how that content can be retrieved, how clearly the organisation is identified as an entity, and what independent sources say about it.

How GEO differs from SEO

Search engine optimization targets ranked results pages. GEO targets synthesised answers, where an AI system may quote, paraphrase, cite or omit a source. The two overlap heavily: crawlable, well-structured, authoritative content serves both.

What GEO cannot do

No practitioner controls what an AI system outputs. Answers vary by system, model version, phrasing, location and time. GEO improves the likelihood and accuracy of representation; it does not guarantee it.
