GeoAI Optimization

Generative Engine Optimization

GEO — Generative Engine OptimizationThe definition, in plain language

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving how organizations are discovered, represented, referenced, cited and recommended by AI-powered search and answer experiences.

The short version

Conventional search returns a list of results and the user chooses what to read. AI-powered search can read sources on the user's behalf and compose an answer. GEO is the work of making sure that, when it does, an organization is found, described accurately and credited where appropriate.

How AI search differs

Conventional search: user → search engine → results → website.

AI search: user → AI-powered system → retrieval, synthesis and context → answer → sources and recommendations.

AI search has not replaced conventional search. Both exist, often side by side in the same product.

What GEO is concerned with

How an organization is:

  • discovered: retrieval systems can find and read its pages
  • represented: answers describe it accurately
  • referenced and cited: answers credit its pages as sources
  • surfaced and recommended: it appears when it fits the task asked
  • interpreted: its facts are understood in context

GEO and SEO

SEO and GEO address related but distinct visibility environments. Crawlable, well-structured, credible content serves both. GEO adds attention to passages, entities, citations and accuracy in generated answers. See SEO and GEO.

What GEO cannot promise

AI-system output is not deterministic. Answers vary by system, model version, wording, location and time. Credible GEO work sets a measured baseline, makes specific improvements and re-measures with the same method.

Where the term comes from

The term was used as the title of a 2023 research paper by Aggarwal et al., GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (arXiv:2311.09735), which studied how content changes affect visibility in generative engine responses. GeoAI Optimization uses the term in this sense. "GeoAI" in our name does not refer to geospatial AI.

Where to go next

Put GEO into practice

Work to a published standard, or start with a measured baseline.
